There is not yet a formal European system for accreditation of
subspecialty training in neonatology.

ESN is working with the European Association of Perinatal Medicine and
the Union of European Neonatal and Perinatal Societies to establish an
overview of national training programmes and an online registry of
individual neonatal training units in Europe.

A set of minimum requirements for accreditation as a training unit has
been developed and the match between these requirements and the data
given by each centre in the online registry is indicated. When the
on-line registry is well established, ESN wants to develop a service
of site visits to neonatal units in countries with no national accreditation/authorisation procedure.

Furthermore, a process for site visits and board refereeing is envisaged for centres that want to apply for labelling as Centres of European Excellence.
